Tom Bogaert

‘Wij Gwij Popinjay’ is Tom Bogaert’s closer look at participation, exposing how it has both positive and negative consequences. His ‘Watoukop’, a monumental head made of painted polyester resin and mounted on the popinjay mast of the Archers’ Guild, is a real eye-catcher. But this compilation, composed by artificial intelligence from faces of people linked to Watou, is also a textbook case of involuntary participation. On the other hand, Bogaert’s collaboration with the Archers’ Guild and his respect for the age-old traditions and rituals of Watou show the power of participation. As always, the coin has two sides.
